Rug sizes: what size rug do you need?
The best part of a bedroom rug is the 18 inches you can see.
Measure the room wall to wall and tell us the bed, sofa or dining table. We will name the standard rug size and show how much rug and floor will show around it.
Built from the size charts of The Citizenry, Emily Henderson and Super Area Rugs.
By the Sizemaven team. Rules checked against their sources October 2026.
- 1Room lengthMeasure along the floor from baseboard to baseboard on the wall the bed or sofa faces. Measure the main rectangle and skip closets and bay windows.
- 2Room widthMeasure the other direction the same way, at floor level. A wall measured at waist height can be an inch off because of trim.
- 3Sofa widthMeasure the front of the sofa from the outside of one arm to the outside of the other, not the seat cushions.
- 4Coffee table lengthMeasure the long side of the tabletop.
- 5Table length or diameterMeasure the long side of the tabletop, or straight across the middle of a round one. For an extending table, measure it with the leaf in.
- 6Table widthMeasure the short side of the tabletop.

What size rug for a dining room
Get a rug that reaches at least 24 inches past every edge of the dining table, so a chair pulled out from the table keeps its back legs on the rug. That makes the rug about 4 feet longer and 4 feet wider than the table. Ruggable and Super Area Rugs both use 24 inches on every side, and The Citizenry says about 4 feet larger than the table.
For deep or upholstered chairs, 30 inches past the table is roomier. Leave at least 12 inches of floor between the rug and the walls (Ruggable). For a round table, use a round rug about 48 inches wider than the table, and for an extending table, measure it with the leaf in.
A 96-inch table needs exactly 144 inches of rug, the full length of a 9 x 12, so Ruggable and Super Area Rugs go up to a 10 x 14 for tables that long.
| Table | Rug it needs | Standard rug |
|---|---|---|
| 36 x 48 in, 4 seats | 96 x 84 in | 8 x 10 ft |
| 36 x 72 in, 6 seats | 120 x 84 in | 8 x 10 ft |
| 40 x 84 in, 6 to 8 seats | 132 x 88 in | 9 x 12 ft |
| 42 x 96 in, 8 seats | 144 x 90 in | 9 x 12 ft |
| 48 in round, 4 seats | 96 in across | 8 ft round |
| 60 in round | 108 in across | 10 ft round |

Questions about rugs
What size rug goes under a queen bed?
An 8 x 10. With the 10-foot side along the headboard wall, it shows about 30 inches of rug on each side of a 60-inch queen, and designers ask for at least 18 to 24 inches. In a small room, a 6 x 9 works, pulled down under the lower part of the bed.
What size rug for a king bed?
A 9 x 12. A king is 76 inches wide, so an 8 x 10 with its 8-foot side across the bed shows only 10 inches on each side. A 10 x 14 is the larger option for big rooms.
How much floor should show around a rug?
About 18 inches between the rug and each wall in most living rooms, and 12 inches in rooms under 10 feet wide. Less than that makes the rug look like wall-to-wall carpet.
How big should a dining room rug be?
At least 24 inches bigger than the table on every side, so chair legs stay on the rug when someone pulls a chair out. A 72-inch table usually needs an 8 x 10, and an 84-inch table a 9 x 12.
Is an 8 x 10 rug exactly 8 by 10 feet?
Often not. Many measure 7 ft 10 in by 9 ft 10 in, and handmade rugs can be an inch or two smaller still. Check the listed dimensions if your fit is tight.
