What size rug for a living room
By the Sizemaven team. Checked against its sources October 14, 2026.
Most living rooms take an 8 x 10 or 9 x 12 ft rug. Choose the largest size that leaves about 18 inches of floor at each wall (12 inches in a room under 10 feet wide), runs at least 6 inches past each end of the sofa, and reaches under the front legs of the sofa and chairs.
- Floor at the walls
- 18 in
- Rug past each sofa end
- 6 to 8 in
- Most common size
- 8 x 10 ft
- All legs on
- 9 x 12 ft and up
Three living room rug layouts
| Layout | What sits on the rug | Usual sizes |
|---|---|---|
| All legs on | Every leg of the sofa and chairs, with about 8 inches of rug beyond them | 9 x 12, 10 x 14 |
| Front legs on | The front legs of the sofa and chairs; the back legs are on the floor | 8 x 10, 9 x 12 |
| Floating | No legs; the rug sits in front of the sofa | 5 x 8, 6 x 9 |
Front legs on is the layout Emily Henderson calls the go-to. Each piece sits on the rug for about one-third of its depth, so a 21-inch-deep chair has about 7 inches on the rug. Super Area Rugs gives the sizes for each layout in the table.
For all legs on, Emily Henderson asks for about 8 inches of rug beyond the furniture. For a floating rug, she keeps the gap between the sofa and the rug to no more than 5 inches.
How far a living room rug should be from the walls
Leave about 18 inches of bare floor between the rug and each wall. Super Area Rugs uses 18 inches, drops to 12 inches in rooms under 10 feet wide, and allows up to 24 inches in open-plan spaces. Emily Henderson gives 10 to 18 inches for an all-legs-on rug, and Slumberland gives 6 to 18 inches.
When the sofa backs onto a wall, the rug can come closer to that wall. The rug size tool starts the rug 24 inches out from the wall behind the sofa, under the front third of a 36-inch-deep sofa, and keeps the usual gap at the other walls.
In an open-plan room, measure only the seating area and treat its edges as the walls.
How much wider than the sofa
The rug should run past each end of the sofa by at least 6 inches, and 8 inches is ideal (Emily Henderson). So an 84-inch sofa needs a rug at least 96 inches long, and ideally 100 inches. An 8 x 10 runs 18 inches past each end of that sofa.
Super Area Rugs says the rug should be at least as wide as the sofa, and ideally wider, and Emily Henderson names a rug that is too small as one of the most common mistakes. When the room only fits a rug about as wide as the sofa, the rug size tool suggests a floating layout instead.
Room size to rug size
The table runs the rug size tool on common room sizes. It picks the largest standard rug that leaves the floor gap in the last column at every wall.
| Room | Sofa floating | Sofa against a wall | Floor at the walls |
|---|---|---|---|
| 10 x 8 ft | 5 x 8 ft | 5 x 8 ft | 12 in |
| 12 x 9 ft | 6 x 9 ft | 6 x 9 ft | 12 in |
| 12 x 10 ft | 6 x 9 ft | 6 x 9 ft | 18 in |
| 13 x 11 ft | 8 x 10 ft | 6 x 9 ft | 18 in |
| 14 x 12 ft | 8 x 10 ft | 8 x 10 ft | 18 in |
| 15 x 12 ft | 9 x 12 ft | 8 x 10 ft | 18 in |
| 16 x 13 ft | 9 x 12 ft | 9 x 12 ft | 18 in |
| 18 x 14 ft | 10 x 14 ft | 10 x 14 ft | 18 in |
| 20 x 16 ft | 12 x 15 ft | 12 x 15 ft | 18 in |
Super Area Rugs gives wider ranges: a 6 x 9 or 8 x 10 for rooms up to 12 x 15 feet, an 8 x 10 or 9 x 12 for 12 x 18 feet, and a 9 x 12 or 10 x 14 for 14 x 20 feet and larger. For the standard sizes and their real dimensions, see standard rug sizes.
Questions
Is an 8 x 10 rug big enough for a living room?
For most living rooms, yes. Super Area Rugs calls the 8 x 10 the most popular choice, and it suits a front-legs-on layout in a room of about 14 x 11 feet. Larger rooms and all-legs-on layouts need a 9 x 12 or bigger.
Should the rug go under the sofa?
Usually the front legs go on it. About a third of the sofa depth on the rug is the guideline from Emily Henderson. A floating rug in front of the sofa also works, with no more than 5 inches between them.
Can a living room rug be too big?
Yes, when it reaches close to the walls and looks like wall-to-wall carpet. Leave about 18 inches of floor at each wall, or 12 inches in a room under 10 feet wide.
What size rug for a small living room?
A 5 x 8 or 6 x 9. The tool picks a 6 x 9 for a 12 x 9 ft room and a 5 x 8 for a 10 x 8 ft room, each with 12 inches of floor at the walls.
