Dog harness size chart, translated for your dog
Measure the ribs. Every brand calls them something different.
Wrap a tape around your dog's ribs, just behind the front legs. We'll turn that one number into Ruffwear's, PetSafe's, rabbitgoo's and Julius-K9's own sizes.
Built from the size charts of Ruffwear Front Range, Ruffwear measuring guide and PetSafe Easy Walk.
By the Sizemaven team. Rules checked against their sources October 2026.
- 1Chest girthWith your dog standing, wrap a soft tape around the widest part of the rib cage, just behind the front legs. Keep it snug and flat against the body; a loose tape over fluffy fur is the common mistake.
- 2Neck girthMeasure around the base of the neck, where a collar sits. Only rabbitgoo publishes neck ranges, so you can skip this for the other brands.

Dog harness size by breed
Breed gives you only a starting estimate. PetSmart's harness sizing chart groups common breeds by size. Its ranges are wide and overlap: a Large covers chests from 22 to 39 inches, so a Labrador could need almost any size a brand makes.
Use the table to know roughly which part of a brand's chart to look at, then measure. The tape measure decides: enter your dog's chest girth above to get each brand's own size.
| Example breeds (PetSmart) | PetSmart size | Chest girth |

Questions about dog harnesses
How do I measure my dog for a harness?
Wrap a soft tape around the widest part of the rib cage, just behind the front legs, snug but flat. Some brands, such as rabbitgoo and Kurgo, also ask for the neck where a collar sits.
Why is my dog a Small in one brand and a Large in another?
Each brand sets its own ranges. At a 26-inch chest, Ruffwear Front Range says S, PetSafe Easy Walk says Medium and rabbitgoo says L, which is why Sizemaven gives a size per brand.
My dog is between sizes. Which one?
Ruffwear, PetSafe and REI all say to choose the larger size. A lean, narrow-chested dog right on the line can be the exception.
Should I buy a bigger harness for my puppy to grow into?
No. Fit today's chest so the harness cannot slip off, and plan on a bigger one later. Ruffwear notes that larger breeds can keep growing until 12 to 18 months.
How tight should a harness be?
Snug but not restrictive: you should be able to fit two fingers between the harness and your dog.
