- 1HeightStand barefoot with your back to a wall and mark the top of your head. Measure from the floor to the mark.
- 2WeightWeigh yourself at the time of day you usually surf, as O'Neill suggests, since you weigh less in the morning.
- 3Chest or bustKeep your arms relaxed at your sides and wrap the tape around the fullest part of your chest. Keep it level across your back.

How a wetsuit should fit
A wetsuit should be snug everywhere, "like a second skin" (O'Neill). Check the armpits, the lower back and behind the knees: folds or loose neoprene there let water flush through the suit (O'Neill). Rip Curl lists air pockets or bunched neoprene across the torso and shoulders as signs of a poor fit.
The sleeves should end at or just above the wrist bone, and the legs just above the ankle, with no extra material bunching up (Rip Curl). The neck should be snug without choking. Then test how you move: you should be able to touch your toes and swing your arms and shoulders freely (O'Neill), and take a full breath with both arms overhead (Rip Curl).
If you are between two sizes, go up. Xcel says to choose the next size up, and O'Neill says to go up when you are at the top end of a size. This tool goes up when your weight is within 3 lb of the next size, or when your chest measures one size larger than your weight. If the body fits but the sleeves and legs are too short or too long, try the tall (T) or short (S) cut of the same size.
Questions about wetsuits
How should a wetsuit fit?
Snug, "like a second skin" (O'Neill). A loose suit lets cold water flush through, and a suit that is too small restricts movement. You should be able to touch your toes and move your arms freely.
What if I'm between two wetsuit sizes?
Go up. Xcel says to choose the next largest size, and O'Neill says to go up when you're at the top end of a size.
What do the S and T in wetsuit sizes mean?
S is a shorter cut and T is a taller cut of the same chest and waist size. For example, O'Neill's MT fits 6'1"-6'3" and its M fits 5'9"-5'11", with the same chest range.
Do wetsuit sizes match across brands?
Mostly in weight, less in height. O'Neill, Xcel and Billabong all put men's Medium at 155-170 lb, but Xcel's height ranges run about an inch shorter than O'Neill's.
Is a kids' wetsuit size the same as their age?
No. Kids' wetsuit sizes follow height and weight. O'Neill's size 10 fits 4'7"-4'10" and 75-90 lb, whatever the child's age.
