Standard rectangular rug sizes
Rug sizes are written short side first, in feet. Pelletier Rug lists 2 x 3, 3 x 5, 4 x 6, 6 x 9, 8 x 10 and 9 x 12 as the classic sizes, with 10 x 14 and 12 x 15 as the large ones, and the 5 x 8 is the size retailers such as The Citizenry and Super Area Rugs give for a twin bed.
| Size | Inches | Area | Common use |
|---|---|---|---|
| 2 x 3 ft | 24 x 36 in | 6 sq ft | Beside a bed (buy two), an entryway, a kitchen or a bathroom |
| 3 x 5 ft | 36 x 60 in | 15 sq ft | An entryway, a foyer or a stair landing |
| 4 x 6 ft | 48 x 72 in | 24 sq ft | A larger entryway |
| 5 x 8 ft | 60 x 96 in | 40 sq ft | Under a twin bed, a home office |
| 6 x 9 ft | 72 x 108 in | 54 sq ft | Under a full bed, a small or floating living room layout |
| 8 x 10 ft | 96 x 120 in | 80 sq ft | Under a queen bed, most living rooms, a 6-seat dining table |
| 9 x 12 ft | 108 x 144 in | 108 sq ft | Under a king bed, a large living room, an 8-seat dining table |
| 10 x 14 ft | 120 x 168 in | 140 sq ft | A large living room with all legs on, a large dining table |
| 12 x 15 ft | 144 x 180 in | 180 sq ft | A very large or open-plan room |
Some makers also sell in-between sizes. Bassett Furniture mentions 5 x 7 and 7 x 10 rugs, and Pelletier Rug says the 8 x 10 has largely given way to the 8 x 11, which is closer to the shape most people prefer.
Round rug and runner sizes
Common round sizes are 6, 8 and 10 feet across. Super Area Rugs says a round rug should be about as wide as the longest side of the rectangle you would use in the same place. Under a round dining table, Ruggable adds about 48 inches to the table: a 48-inch table takes an 8 ft round.
Runners come 2, 2.5 or 3 feet wide and 6 to 14 feet long (Super Area Rugs). Rugs1 suggests a 2.5 x 8 ft runner on each side of a king bed. For a hallway, Super Area Rugs makes the runner 4 to 6 inches narrower than the hall on each side and ends it 6 to 18 inches from each wall.
Why a rug measures less than its size
The size on the label is a nominal size, a rounded name for the rug. Rug Branch says the real dimensions can differ by 2 to 4 inches, and that an 8 x 10 from one maker might be 7 ft 10 in x 10 ft 2 in. Pelletier Rug says rugs measuring 5 ft 9 in x 8 ft 9 in were once commonly sold as 6 x 9.
Rugs made to metric sizes also round to feet. A 240 x 300 cm rug is about 94 x 118 inches, or 7 ft 10 in x 9 ft 10 in, and it is sold as an 8 x 10.
When your fit is tight, check the listed dimensions in inches or centimeters on the product page, not the size name.
How to pick from the standard sizes
- 1Measure the roomMeasure wall to wall at the floor, both ways. In an open-plan room, measure the area the rug should cover.
- 2Take off the floor gapSubtract 18 inches from each side, or 12 inches in a room under 10 feet wide (Super Area Rugs).
- 3Round down to a standard sizePick the largest standard size inside what is left. A 15 x 12 ft room leaves 12 x 9 ft, which is a 9 x 12.
- 4Check it against the furnitureUnder a bed, use the bedroom rug guide. In a living room, see living room rug sizes.
Questions
What is the most common rug size?
The 8 x 10. Super Area Rugs calls it the most popular living room size, and it is the usual size under a queen bed and a 6-seat dining table.
How big is an 8 x 10 rug in inches?
96 x 120 inches, or 80 square feet, as a nominal size. Many 8 x 10 rugs measure a few inches less, such as 94 x 118 inches for a rug made to 240 x 300 cm.
Is a 5 x 7 a standard rug size?
Many makers sell it, but it is not one of the classic sizes Pelletier Rug lists. The 5 x 8 is the more common size for a room.
Which number in a rug size is the width?
The first number is the short side and the second is the long side, so an 8 x 10 is 8 feet one way and 10 feet the other.
