Average ring size for women and men

By the Sizemaven team. Checked against its sources October 14, 2026.

The most common ring size for women in the US is 6, with most women buying 5 to 7, according to Blue Nile and VRAI. For men it is 9, with most buying 8 to 10.5 (Blue Nile). A size 6 is 16.5 mm across the inside and a size 9 is 18.9 mm. These are sales figures, so they are a poor guess for one person.

Blake Bros also names size 6 as the most common for women, with most falling from 5 to 7, and does not give a source for the figure.

Why the average is a poor guess for a gift

Ring sizes are close together. Size 5 and size 7 are only 1.6 mm apart in diameter, yet a ring two sizes off either will not pass the knuckle or will slide off. Blue Nile's most purchased women's range covers 5 to 7, which is five half sizes, so picking 6 is right for only part of the people in that range.

  • The finger matters. A ring for the ring finger is a different size from one for the index or little finger.
  • The hand matters. Blue Nile notes that size varies with the hand you use most.
  • The band matters. Bands over 4 mm wide need at least half a size more, according to Brilliant Earth.
  • Some rings cannot be fixed. Tungsten, titanium and ceramic cannot be resized, so a wrong size means an exchange.

How to find someone's ring size secretly

GIA lists several ways to get a size without asking. Each one needs a ring the person wears on the same finger as the new ring.

  1. 1
Borrow a ringTake a ring from their jewelry box that they wear on the right finger, and return it before it is missed. Measure the inside diameter, lay it on the printable ring sizer, or take it to a jeweler. Tell the jeweler which hand it is worn on.
  2. 2
Trace the insideLay a plain ring on paper and trace around its inside edge with a sharp pencil. Measure the traced circle across its widest point.
  3. 3
Press it into soapPress the ring into a bar of soap to leave an impression a jeweler can read. Wipe the ring clean afterward.
  4. 4
Ask a friend or relativeA close friend or family member may know the size, or can find out without raising suspicion.

Enter the inside diameter you measured in the ring size calculator, choosing "Inside of a ring that fits". It also tells you whether the new ring needs a larger size because it is wider.

If you have to guess

If you cannot measure, choose the larger of two likely sizes, which Blue Nile and Brilliant Earth both advise when someone is between sizes. Avoid tungsten, titanium and ceramic, which cannot be resized, and check the seller's resizing and exchange policy before you buy.
