How to size a belt for a woman

Decide where the belt will sit, then measure there: the natural waist, the narrowest part of your torso, for a belt over a dress, or the high hip or jean waistband for a belt worn lower. Pick the size whose range includes that number. On Corkor's chart a small suits up to about 30 inches and a medium up to about 34.

A belt at the natural waist and a belt at the high hip need different sizes. Measure at the height where you will wear the belt.

Where a women's belt sits

Women's belts are worn at two heights, and the right size depends on which one you mean. A belt that cinches a dress, a blazer or a sweater sits at the natural waist. A belt in jeans or trousers sits at the waistband, on the high hip. Stegmann notes that the high hip or jean waistband usually measures 2 to 4 inches more than the natural waist.

If you plan to wear one belt in both places, size it for the larger, lower measurement and use a tighter hole at the waist.

Letter sizes in inches

Letter sizes are not a standard. Corkor's medium is for a waist up to about 34 inches, while Stegmann's medium fits up to 39, because Stegmann sizes for the high hip and its belts have more holes.

Corkor's recommended waist per size, Stegmann's fit range (measured at the waist or high hip), and the waist range Sizemaven's belt tool uses for each letter.

Levi's women's belt chart sits close to Corkor's, with XS for a 24 to 26 inch waist and S for 27 to 30. Corkor and Stegmann both say to size up when you are near the top of a range, because a belt with spare holes can always be tightened.

Many women's belts on Amazon print the waist range next to the letter, such as "M: fits waist 31-36". That range is a better guide than the letter. The belt size tool matches belts by that stated range.

Dress and pant sizes are only a rough guide

Brands publish pant sizes beside their belt letters, but the pairings differ, and a pant size says nothing about whether you wear the belt at the waist or the hip. Use them only when you cannot measure.

Jeans labeled in inches, such as a 28, are closer to a real measurement than a dress size. Even so, a tape around the spot where the belt will sit gives the most accurate answer.

How women's belts are measured

Women's belts are measured the same way as men's: from the buckle to the middle hole. Stegmann's belts have seven holes and are measured to the fourth, which gives about 3 inches of adjustment either way, so its small (32 inches to the middle hole) fits waists from 29 to 35 inches.

What size belt does a size 8 woman wear?

Usually a small or medium, depending on the brand. Cole Haan pairs pant sizes 8-10 with a medium and Stegmann pairs a size 8 with a small. A size 8 is often about a 32 inch waist, which is a medium on Corkor's chart. Measure to be sure.

Should a belt sit at the waist or on the hips?

Either, depending on the outfit. A belt over a dress or top usually sits at the natural waist, and a belt in jeans sits on the high hip. Size the belt for the place you will wear it.

Are women's belt sizes the same as men's?

They are measured the same way, from the buckle to the middle hole, but women's belts are mostly sold by letter with a waist range, while men's belts are sold by number.

What if I am between two sizes?

Size up. Corkor and Stegmann both recommend it, because a longer belt can be buckled on a tighter hole, while a short one cannot be let out.

Can a woman wear a men's belt?

Yes. A men's belt size is the waist it fits plus about 2 inches, so for a 30 inch measurement where the belt sits, a men's size 32 fits on the middle hole.
