Queen size bed dimensions

By the Sizemaven team. Checked against its sources October 14, 2026.

A standard US queen mattress is 60 inches wide and 80 inches long, which is 5 ft by 6 ft 8 in, or about 152 x 203 cm. A frame with a headboard makes the footprint about 64 x 86 inches. For 30 inches of walkway on both sides and at the foot, plan on a room of at least 10 ft 4 in by 9 ft 8 in.

Queen mattress size in inches, feet and centimeters

Every standard US queen mattress is 60 inches wide and 80 inches long. Mattress makers list the same size, though metric conversions differ by half a centimeter between brands. The height depends on the mattress, so check the listing for it.

An Olympic queen is a less common variant at 66 x 80 inches, 6 inches wider than a standard queen. Avocado notes that standard queen sheets, protectors, frames and foundations do not fit it, so confirm the exact size before you buy bedding for one.

How a frame and headboard add to the footprint

The 60 x 80 inches is the mattress alone. The frame sits a little larger, and a headboard or footboard adds length. Amerisleep puts queen frames at 62 to 65 inches wide and 82 to 85 inches long, and says frames are usually 2 to 5 inches bigger than the mattress.

A frame's real footprint varies by style and brand. When you have picked a frame, use the outside dimensions on its listing rather than these allowances.

What size room a queen bed needs

Room size depends on the walkway you leave around the bed. Every bedroom layout guide we read puts the minimum at 24 inches. Keck Furniture suggests 30 to 36 inches beside a queen, and the bed size tool counts 30 inches on each side and at the foot as comfortable.

With a 64 x 86 inch headboard frame, 30 inches on each side gives 124 inches of width (10 ft 4 in), and 30 inches at the foot gives 116 inches of depth (9 ft 8 in). Two 20-inch nightstands fit inside those side walkways with a 4-inch gap to the bed.

In a 10 x 10 ft room, a queen leaves 28 inches on each side, which the tool rates as a tight fit. Amerisleep and Avocado both give 10 x 10 ft as the minimum room for a queen. In a 12 x 12 ft room, a queen leaves 40 inches on each side.

Keep the bed out of the door swing, and leave room in front of a closet and a dresser. Keck suggests at least 36 inches in front of a dresser so the drawers open.

Queen versus full and king

A queen is 6 inches wider and 5 inches longer than a full. A king is the same length as a queen and 16 inches wider. A California king is 12 inches wider and 4 inches longer than a queen.
